Come see Kiki's Delivery Service presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

New on campus and nervous about finding your feet? Or back for your second (or third, or fourth) year and looking for a cosy classic? However you’re feeling, Kiki’s Delivery Service is the perfect film for early on in term one of the uni year. This quintessential animation tells the story of Kiki, a young witch who takes off (literally) on her mandatory year of living independently in a brand new town. Accompanied by her snarky but loveable talking cat Jiji, she faces trials in the forms of thunderstorms, big-city traffic, and feelings of self-doubt. However, as she runs tasks for her titular courier service, she also befriends characters from all walks of life, who help her along the way to establishing herself in the town and figuring herself out. 

Just as Princess Mononoke brought us a powerful ecological message and Howl’s Moving Castle a gorgeous animated romance, Kiki’s Delivery Service serves as Miyazaki’s take on the coming-of-age genre, infusing magical whimsy into a story of humanity anyone can relate to. As can always be expected from Studio Ghibli, the animation perfectly complements this charming feel, with some truly enchanting shots of both the natural world and urban life, inspired by the animation team’s visits to various European beauty spots. The film’s soundtrack is equally delightful, the work of Joe Hisaishi, a longtime collaborator of Miyazaki’s and an icon of animated film scoring. Each technical aspect comes seamlessly together to create a piece of art which feels like a warm hug in movie form. [Lily Sharp]
