A dazzling reimagining of the perennial classic The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz  is a spectacular movie musical based on the iconic Broadway play. Reimagining Dorothy as a Harlem schoolteacher transported to a surreal version of Oz resembling New York City, the film was a landmark release in 1978 for being a lavish studio picture led by an all African American cast and made by a mostly African American creative team. The talent involved was immense. Diana Ross stars as our new Dorothy, alongside other icons like a young Michael Jackson (in his only feature film role) and Richard Pryor (as the wizard himself), with the musical supervision of the legendary Quincy Jones, and the direction of Sidney Lumet, one of the giants of 1970’s Hollywood! An unfortunate flop upon release, the film has gone on to become a serious cult classic, with jaw-dropping musical numbers filled with kaleidoscopic colour, incredible tunes and breathtaking set design. If you’ve seen the original film too many times to count, or if you want to discover a movie musical slightly off the beaten (yellow brick) road, this old-school spectacular is not one to be missed with a crowd on the big screen in L3!
