Come see Before Sunrise and Before Sunset presented on stunning 35mm film and Before Midnight presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

Romance, to me, is one of the hardest genres to achieve through film. When written poorly, romance can easily be cringe-inducing or saccharine, but when written right… Well, that’s Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy. Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and Jesse and Celine, the trilogy focuses upon their relationship across a period of around twenty years, with the three films themselves released in 1995, 2004, and 2013. The first film — Before Sunrise — introduces Jesse and Celine as they spend a night together in Vienna, before they ultimately part company. Before Sunrise reunites Jesse and Celine nine years later in Paris, causing their romantic memories to return despite their developing lives. Finally, Before Midnight sees Jesse and Celine married, yet their relationship begins to show its cracks.

Why does the romance depicted in Linklater’s Before trilogy succeed so completely then? Well, Linklater devotes his films entirely to dialogue — any spectacle is removed to concentrate upon the chemistry and relationship between his two leads, thereby prioritising realism and relatability. Furthermore, it’s Linklater’s patient production of the trilogy across two decades that enhances its relatability across all ages and experiences. With Hawke and Delpy initially depicted in their mid-twenties, Before Sunrise captures the charm and abandon of young love, while Before Sunrise explores the regret and yearning of romance. Before Midnight, however, offers the most honest perspective upon love in its complex yet ultimately hopeful depiction of a long-term relationship.
