Come see BlacKkKlansman presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!
John David Washington’s breakthrough performance, BlacKkKlansman, is based on the memoir written by Ron Stallworth, the first African American police officer and detective hired at Colorado Springs Police Department. The story reflects the true events of 1978, which saw Ron (John David Washington) attempt to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) with the help of his coworker (Adam Driver). Whilst parts of the narrative were dramatised for entertainment purposes, the fictitious doesn’t take away from the movies overall impact, a modernly relevant message which Lee reinforces with concluding current footage: racism is still alive. An established collaborator with Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, composed the score — noting that after seeing the 70s leather coats, bellbottom jeans, and hair styles, Jimi Hendrix and his electric guitar became an extreme inspiration for him. Specifically, he wanted to tap into the patriotic feeling behind Hendrix’s rendition of the national anthem: “Here was an African American guy, playing this theme, which to me had the effect of screaming, ‘I’m an American, too. I belong here, and I should be afforded all of the rights that everybody else has.’” This screening is one of four chosen to celebrate Black History Month at Warwick Student Cinema this October, a crime-comedy “far more frightening than it is funny”, as described by David Ehrlich.
