Come see Yojimbo presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

Yojimbo. Akira Kurosawa’s 1962 samurai film perhaps doesn’t inspire the same familiarity as, say, Seven Samurai, yet in many ways Yojimbo encapsulates the variety of Kurosawa’s complex career. Yojimbo follows a ronin who arrives in a town divided by rival gangs, both of which attempt to recruit the ronin for their destructive causes. As is frequent amongst Kurosawa’s earlier works, swordplay dominates Yojimbo’s action, which is propelled by Kurosawa’s ever-dynamic direction and iconic leading man Toshiro Mifune in his thirteenth collaboration with Kurosawa. However, Yojimbo thematically prefigures the pessimism that haunts Kurosawa’s later films. As in 1985’s Ran, regional warfare is only ended here through extreme bloodshed, thereby complicating Kurosawa’s early humanist leanings. Yet Yojimbo’s significance reigns beyond the boundaries of its runtime. It is one of two films by Kurosawa to receive a sequel, while Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone later plagiarised Yojimbo into spaghetti Western tentpole A Fistful of Dollars in 1964. With undeniable influence and displaying acute directorial prowess, Yojimbo is thus a fascinating jewel in Kurosawa’s sparkling career. [Sam Ripley]
