Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is a visually spectacular and thematically rich film that explores love, wealth, ambition, and the destructive nature of the American Dream. Set in 1920s New York, the story is narrated by Nick Carraway, who becomes fascinated by his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a wealthy and charismatic man who throws extravagant parties in the hope of reconnecting with Daisy Buchanan, the woman he has loved for years. The film’s greatest strength is its visual style. Luhrmann uses lavish costumes, extravagant sets, and vibrant colours to capture the excitement and excess of the Jazz Age. However, beneath the glamour lies a darker message, one that is deeply rooted in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original novel. The characters’ obsession with money and status reveals how wealth can create loneliness rather than happiness. Watching The Great Gatsby on the big screen at Warwick Student Cinema is anticipated to be a truly fantastic experience. [Nell Carter]
