Already a cult classic, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is the mockumentary follow-up to the cult TV series of the same name, following two musicians’ increasingly absurd attempts to book a show at their local Toronto venue, The Rivoli. The film pushes the band’s escapades into even more outlandish territory, catalysed by a Back to the Future-inspired narrative that sees the duo accidentally sent back in time to 2008. Matt Johnson’s characteristic fusion of a vérité, guerrilla-style filmmaking approach with intricate, highly orchestrated gags is at its apex here. The film therefore exists in a constant tension between spontaneity and spectacle, where hilarious moments of improvisation can suddenly give way to sequences that are shockingly elaborate in their construction, including a mind-boggling jump off the CN Tower. However, beneath the barrage of ingeniously constructed gags lies, at its core, a deceptively heartwarming story of enduring friendship. [Harvey Lister]
