Come see The Odyssey presented on stunning 70mm film on the big screen in L3!

It’s March 2024. Christopher Nolan has just netted two Academy Awards for producing and directing Oppenheimer. Nolan is undoubtedly at the pinnacle of his already legendary career. But what could one of the twenty-first century’s most successful filmmakers possibly size up as his next project? The answer? Only adapting a legend itself, one of the most foundational works in the literary canon: Homer’s The Odyssey.

Originally transmitted as oral poetry, The Odyssey follows the warrior Odysseus, as he returns to his home of Ithaca following the Trojan War, where his wife Penelope and son Telemachus are affronted by ambitious suitors. But where Homer’s Odyssey celebrates the ingenuity of Odysseus’s efforts, Nolan’s Odyssey builds thematically upon the guilt-ridden anxieties of Oppenheimer. Here, The Odyssey is a tale of post-war trauma that springs from Odysseus’s wily machinations. To achieve this timely reinterpretation, Nolan has recruited a star-studded ensemble cast. Matt Damon leads the charge as Odysseus while Tom Holland portrays Telemachus, but it’s Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway as Antinous and Penelope respectively who are on top form here. And that’s only the cast: as is Nolan’s wont, physical spectacle is infused into every frame of The Odyssey. From the siege of Troy to the yawning expanse of the Mediterranean, Nolan crafts breathtaking vistas to visually realise the scope of Homer’s poetry. 

It would be tempting now to ask how Nolan could possibly follow up The Odyssey, a project that he himself has admitted to be his most challenging so far. But let’s just take a moment to appreciate The Odyssey itself. Despite any challenges that Nolan may have faced, he has once more risen above them - The Odyssey is a triumph that fittingly and respectfully reappropriates one of the world’s most significant works of literature.
