Red cord cards installed in SU accessible toilets

Emergency red cords installed in accessible toilets across the university campus allow users to call for assistance if they fall or are otherwise in need of help. To work effectively these red cords need to hang freely all the way to the floor. Unfortunately, they sometimes get tied up or looped around fixtures within the facilities, which ultimately endangers users.

To help prevent this from happening, the SU have installed ‘red cord cards’, as pictured below. The red cord cards read “This red emergency cord must hang freely all the way to the floor. If it does not, it may prevent a disabled person from asking for help.”

We’re also calling on the university to install red cord cards within their accessible toilet facilities across campus. In the meantime, you can help by freeing any red cords you see tied or looped around fixtures in accessible facilities.
