Fact-finding and Benchmarking
We were formally given our most up-to-date carbon footprint data as a Students' Union in Spring 2025, allowing us to set targets for reductions.
Read our 2022-2023 Carbon Footprint report here
We have been calculating the CO2 emissions impact of each meal on our menu in the Duck since the start of the 23/24 Academic Year, allowing us to taper the offers and reduce carbon impact through "micro-nudging" techniques.
Education and Advocacy
Warwick SU was one of the five founder members of Sustainable SUs (SSU) - a ground-breaking coalition dedicated to propelling the green transition within the realm of food and beverage services across Students' Unions (SUs).
Our team have collaborated in working groups and chef masterclasses with both the Humane Society International and Made in Hackney to develop new menu items for our menus.
Did You Know?
We purchased ground-breaking assistive technology to fit to our cellar cooling devices that significantly reduces energy usage and carbon impact.
We are one of the first Students' Unions in the UK to purchase and install a commercial air fryer to reduce waste, save energy, and improve the health benefits of our food on offer.
All the used cooking oil from our outlets is collected to be transferred into high-quality biodiesel.
All the food waste we collect is processed through anaerobic digestion facilities. Because this process produces renewable energy as well as organic fertiliser, it delivers greenhouse gas savings that are six times higher than composting.
Supporting Sustainable Practices
We ensure our suppliers and partners align with sustainability values, working collaboratively to enhance ethical and environmentally-friendly practices.
From plant-based menu innovations to waste reduction strategies, we continuously explore ways to reduce our environmental impact.
You can read our policy on Promotional Exclusions and Sustainable Procurement here.
Community and Student Engagement
We actively engage students in sustainability efforts, encouraging pledges, participation in green initiatives, and advocacy for a more sustainable future.
Our Sustainability Forum is made up of students who are passionate about the future of our planet and want to promote more earth-conscious behaviours. They work with relevant staff, elected Officers and student groups to support work towards tackling climate change, and to support work to ensure an ethical Union and University. Find out more here.
Through workshops, campaigns, and volunteering opportunities, we empower our community to take meaningful climate action.
Partnerships
Our team regularly works collaboratively with a number of brilliant partners both locally and nationally, including:
