Welcome to the Integrated Science Society!
As a free to join society, InSoc brings together different fields of science in an interdisciplinary scientific experience accessible to all Warwick students, whether studying a science-affiliated course or simply those with scientific curiosity. We aim to provide a welcoming environment allowing for a shared passion in science, running various events throughout the year including academic speaker events, socials and informal seminars.
We’re also accredited by the Society of Natural Sciences, so any InSoc members also qualify for free SNS membership!
What do we do?
Academic Speaker Events
• We regularly invite speakers across the scientific community to present innovative scientific findings and research across many disciplines of science; these have included but not been limited to, science communications, medicine and public health, genetics, structural and molecular biology and disease and epidemiology.
• The opportunity to speak with these guests is also available following each event, allowing our members the chance to ask questions and follow up in a small group setting.
• Other than our regular speaker events, we aim for one large speaker event per year. In the academic year 2024/25 this was Harvard professor Richard Losick, who delivered a series of lectures stemming from nearly six decades of experience, whereby he had conducted groundbreaking research into molecular biology.
• Previous notable speakers from other years include Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse, who delivered a talk on his book “What is Life”, and MRC director Professor Jan Löwe, who presented a talk about careers in science.
Socials
It’s not all about academics— throughout the year, we host a variety of social events, from pub meals and socials to bowling, nights out or other fun events— the social secs have got you covered. Whether there’s alcohol involved or not, there’s something for everyone!
Informal Seminars
• We want everyone to be supported as best as they can during their academic journey, and these informal seminars are a great opportunity to do so.
• These informal conversation sessions allow the chance to talk with peers in other years and be supported through their experiences and advice, such as for choosing modules, writing lab reports and exam tips and tricks.
