Library Update

The SU is continuing to lobby for the opening of more study spaces around campus, and ultimately the reopening of the Library. Follow this link for an update on library spaces and services.

Education Update Education Update

As the main Library is not accessible in the usual way, we thought we’d update you on how to access the wide range of services the Library is providing at the moment.

Various Library-managed study spaces remain available, operating as Covid-safe spaces.  Government guidance states that we should stay at home and only leave home if essential.  So if you can work from home you should.  However if your accommodation is not conducive to study the Library offers the following:

  • The Rootes Grid, which is available for undergraduates and other current students of the University.  We also have the Rootes FlexiGrid, Panorama Rooms and Chancellors Room (on the 1st and 2nd?Floors) within the Rootes Social Building.
  • For PG students, we have the Postgrad Hub in Junction, the Old Sports Hall.
  • For Medical and Life Sciences students, there is the BioMed Grid on Gibbet Hill.
  • All these sites are open seven days a week – check out our website for full details.

We are continually reviewing the situation and opening up new spaces where we can, based on current demand.  Check out the Study Space Availability pages on the web and on the MyWarwick app to see what is available and where.

(Just to note, additional study space has recently been made available by colleagues in the Junction Main Hall.  This is facilitated by the Student Experience Ambassadors and is also included in the Study Space Availability pages.)

 Given social distancing guidelines, these spaces are open for individual study only at the moment, and users need to follow the University’s safe working and sanitising practices.  When visiting our sites users:

  • MUST wear a face covering (unless they have a medical exemption not to);
  • need to remain 2 metres apart from others, including Library staff;
  • need to sanitise their hands.

There is cleaning equipment so users can also clean their work station and equipment to keep safe.

We treat the safely of our users and staff very seriously.  If users do not follow these rules they will be asked to leave.

If students want help with virtual group working, one of our student Library Associates has produced a really useful Study Blog post on how to effectively do this online.

If students want help with avoiding procrastination, the Library runs virtual ‘Switch On and Work’ sessions open to all students and ‘Write Here, Write Now’ online events for postgrads.  ‘Switch On and Work’ is on Thursdays, 1-5, during term time.  ‘Write Here, Write Now’ runs Tuesdays and Fridays, 09.30 – 12.30 – see the Library calendar for details.

Students registered with Disability Services can still book to use accessible study rooms in the PG Hub (during regular opening hours) and the Main Library (10-4, Monday to Sunday).

If needed, there is also access to the specialist databases Eikon and Datastream, hosted on specific Library workstations.  Students need to book a slot for these between 10 and 4, using the online form.

Our collections also remain available:

  • We have reinstated the Click & Collect service that proved popular last lockdown.  Unlike last year (when the service ran for three days a week) the service now runs seven days a week, Monday to Sunday, 10-4.  Students need to pre-order books using an online form.
  • As well as Click & Collect there are free Postal Loans for all UK-based students.
  • Students can also return items by our Freepost Returns service or via the returns bin at the main Library.
  • If anyone is just after a specific chapter from a book or a specific journal article, Scan and Deliver is also back.  Students can request one chapter of a book or one article per issue of a journal, subject to copyright permissions.  This will then be scanned and emailed to their Warwick email account.

Of course, the easiest way to access information is to make use of the Library’s massive collection of e-resources.  We have 1 million e-books and nearly 67,000 e-journals, with a lot more e-textbooks purchased (where possible) since Lockdown 1.  Check out Library Search for relevant titles and the Library’s YouTube channel for tips on finding e-resources.

Should students need more help with their research they can always get in touch with their Academic Support Librarian.  ASLs will happily book a Teams chat to provide advice and searching tips.

If students want to join in with the Library community and make use of some of our wellbeing activities (such as mindfulness sessions), the Library’s Study Happy Programme remains available online and through our social media accounts (@WarwickLibrary).

We hope this update has been useful.  We have covered a lot here and our services are constantly evolving.  Always check out the Library website for more and up-to-date details.  And if you can’t find out what you need do get in touch by emailing library@warwick.ac.uk.
