Xananas, Warwick Students’ Union’s premier bistro-style restaurant, was opened in 1998 with the construction of the Union North building (now SUHQ).
You can find us on Floor 1 of SUHQ, above Rootes Grocery Store as you look at the building from the outside. The restaurant is fully accessible and a lift is available.
The story behind the name
The restaurant's name pays homage to Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, an East Timorese guerrilla fighter who battled a genocidal Indonesian occupation for 25 years - during which around one third of the population of East Timor was eliminated.
Dodging Indonesian assassination attempts for years while building a formidable resistance army, Xanana led the Timorese to independence in 1999, in no small part thanks to international solidarity work that had been carried out across the
globe – including at Warwick. Xanana became the first president of an independent East Timor (now Timor Leste) in 2002.
