Candidate for the position of Ethnic Minorities Officer

We’re Nazifa and Rachel and we’re running to be the SU Ethnic Minorities officers. Both of us are second year students studying History and Politics and History. Throughout our time at Warwick, the both of us have been involved with a number of societies including Warwick Anti-Racism Society, Warwick Labour, girls Bible Study and the Islamic society. We’re both dedicated anti-racist, feminist and climate justice activists and believe that we can represent the voices of ethnic minority students on campus. Our priorities as SU Ethnic Minorities Officers would be:

CAMPAIGNS 

Work with the welfare and campaigns officer to ensure there are campus-wide campaigns for: 

Black History Month 

Islamophobia Awareness Month 

Holocaust Memorial Day 

Nakba Day 

Roma and Traveller History Month 

 

STUDENT VOICE AND EXPERIENCE 

Hold fortnightly drop-in sessions for ethnic students to strengthen ethnic student voice in SU 

Work with full-time officers to improve culturally competent care and expand the scope of The Decolonise Project 

Create a series of events catered to BAME students during Welcome Week 

Work with the university to make special arrangements for exam periods which coincide with religious festivals easier 

 

COMMUNITY ORGANISING 

Work with Warwick Anti-Racism society and cultural societies and local grassroots movements to create and facilitate a network of solidarity within the local community in Coventry and Leamington Spa 

Work with the Widening Participation team to encourage more BAME students to apply to Warwick 

 

ANTI-RACISM 

Protect the most marginalised on campus by ensuring racism is included in definition of student safety in the External Speakers Policy 

Develop an anti-racist training programme for all university staff, including campus security, residential life tutors, lecturers and seminar tutors
