We are Warwick Game Design Society - we make games. Videogames, card games, board games - every kind of game is encouraged!
You can be a programmer, artist, writer, designer, musician, animator, modeller, or not yet know what you want to be! No prior experience is required to come along and get stuck in. And you certainly don't have to be good at coding to make games - plenty of tools exist that don't require it at all! We have strong links with industry members and are involved with a games career event that runs in term 2, so those looking for industry connections would find us a great place to start.
If you'd like to come to an event but would like more information, there are contact links at the bottom of this page. Our exec members are very friendly and will be happy to answer any questions you have about our events or about game design, so drop us an email or Discord message!
Workshops - 2-6pm every Wednesday
The workshop is a drop-in session for people to come along, collaborate with others on games and bounce design and mechanical ideas off one another. If you've never come along to the society before, this is a great place to start.
This year, we are also trialling out a Game Design Book Club, featuring discussions about different aspects of game design and games that focus on those aspects well. These sessions will run at 5pm at the end of each workshop and a different society member will take control of the discussion each week; keep an eye out on our social media for more information.
Talks and Showcases - 7pm every Thursday
On some weeks, we hold talks by society members or industry professionals on a diverse set of topics. In the past, this has included talks on how to make the first five minutes of your game stand out, how to write a Game Design Document to assist in the game design process and how to survive your first game jam. There's also usually a Lightning Talks session once a term for anyone to have their five minutes in the limelight talking about any game design topic they fancy.
On other weeks, we hold showcase sessions where anybody in the society can come to the front and show off their games on a projector and get feedback in realtime. We get lots of fun games shown off here, so try not to be shy about showing off what you've made - any game you've worked on is something to be proud of! There is a theme running between each pair of showcase sessions to help get the creative juices flowing.
Pub Social - Every Thursday after the talk/showcase
After each Thursday session, we head over to the Phantom Coach in Canley - it's a great little pub a short walk past Tesco with reasonably priced food and great company (well, if you come along with us)!
Around twice a term, we host a 48hr Game Jam, where we set a theme at the start and everybody is free to sue whatever tool they'd like to make a game to that theme. We encourage people to work together for these events, but working alone is totally fine too. In the past, people have come along to a jam with no experience, and by the end have completed their very first game - it's very inspiring. That could be you!
At least once a term, we hold a Gaming Social to get together and play local multiplayer games together. We play a lot of Jackbox, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, board games, Nidhogg - a range of stuff. It's good fun!
At the end of each term, there's also a WGD Quiz. It's a relatively new event, but it tends to be very popular and a good way to wind down at the end of a stressful term.
Just before the academic year kicks off, we have a society outing to EGX in Birmingham, and we're also open to travelling down to London for EGX Rezzed later in the year if there is the demand.
There are all sorts of events in the pipeline all the time so look out on our social media channels for more information!
