Constellations tracks the romantic relationship between beekeeper Roland and cosmologist Marianne. Marianne’s belief in alternate universes is put to the test after she is diagnosed with a tumour that affects her memory and motor neurone skills. The couple try to reorganise their accounts of their relationship, ranging from their first meeting at a barbecue, to the confession of an affair, to their rekindling at a dance class that leads to their eventual marriage. However, Marianne requires most of the intimate moments of their life to be replayed because the outcomes she remembers don’t fit. Roland is supportive throughout this process, even when Marianne’s eventual decision regarding her treatment threatens everything they’ve just rebuilt.
