Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder is a gripping and unsettling crime film inspired by South Korea’s first serial-murder investigation. Set in a rural community during the 1980s, it follows two detectives with contrasting methods as they attempt to identify a killer who repeatedly targets women. Song Kang-ho portrays an impulsive local detective, while Kim Sang-kyung effectively portrays his more disciplined Seoul counterpart. Their growing frustration over the elusiveness of the case exposes the weaknesses of the police investigation, including violence, corruption and a lack of reliable forensic evidence. Bong combines dark humour with moments of shocking brutality, creating a story that is disturbing but undoubtedly compelling. Rather than offering a simple mystery with a satisfying solution, Memories of Murder examines institutional failure and society’s desire for justice, leaving a lot of interpretation up to the viewer.
