Come see Pulp Fiction presented on stunning 35mm film on the big screen in L3!
If you’ve seen Pulp Fiction before, you’ll know this film needs no introduction. And if you haven’t, what exactly have you been watching your whole life?
In brief terms, the film is a flashy snapshot of the interconnecting stories of two hitmen, their boss’s lonely wife, a boxer caught between pride and duty, and a neurotic duo of criminal lovebirds. This wild mishmash of characters, and their lovers, allies and enemies who come along for the bumpy ride, result in such an airtight storyline that you’ll hardly notice the two-and-a-half hour runtime flying by.
However, as cleverly interwoven as it is, the plot is far from the most memorable part of this film: it’s the snappy dialogue, zingy soundtrack, and iconic moments which have long ensured Pulp Fiction’s enduring place in the cinematic hall of fame. Hearing Dick Dale’s Misirlou (even if you don’t know it by name, you definitely know the song) as the opening credits roll is nothing short of exhilarating, whilst Mia and Vincent twisting to the sound of Chuck Berry’s You Never Can Tell should easily be in anyone’s top ten movie dance scenes. An underrated scene perhaps is Mia’s solo dance to Urge Overkill’s cover of Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon, a tender moment which solidifies Uma Thurman’s character as among the coolest of Tarantino’s.
Overall, this film is stylish, energetic, and packed full of scenes which continue to influence and be referenced today. It flashes through graphic imagery of violence and drug abuse in a way which both shocks and compels, mirroring the cheap pulp books of the mid-20th century the film is named after. So, “don’t be a square”, and come along to make up your own mind on what was really in that briefcase all along. [Lily Sharp]
