Oh, the weather outside is freezy,
And the airport lines are crazy,
But my passport’s stamped and ready
Let me go, let me go, let me go!
Welcome to another episode of Destination of the Week. This week will present you the first trip to take over the Christmas holiday and the first trip to depart from the comfort of Birmingham Airport.
If you aren’t familiar with Destination of the Week, it is a series in which we provide you with trip ideas that you can carry out with your friends without breaking the bank.
The Christmas throne was given to…
Drum rolls🥁🥁🥁
Malta🇲🇹
Malta makes its way to becoming the first island nation on Destination of the Week.
Nestled among the Mediterranean, Malta offers a fusion of European and Arab culture, it can be seen from their architecture and to their language. An island nation so small, that it’s the size of Birmingham, yet offers so much.
So what does Malta have to offer?
If you’re a Warwick student looking to escape the freezing Cov weather and pitch-black 4pm sunsets. Instead of shivering on campus, you get sunny weather and a proper festive vibe without the frostbite. The island goes all-in for Christmas: Rabat (yes, Malta has one too) turns into a cosy Christmas market village with lights, food stalls, mulled wine and local crafts, while Valletta becomes a full-on aesthetic Christmas postcard at night.
There are also live nativity scenes where entire villages recreate Bethlehem with actors and animals, which is weirdly wholesome and a cool cultural experience. Nights out aren’t dead either; Paceville’s clubs stay busy through December, and New Year’s Eve in Valletta means fireworks and massive crowds.
Perhaps you may wonder “What landmarks does Malta have to offer?”
What if I told you that Malta has a historical landmark older than the pyramids? The Mnajdra Temples date prior to the building of the pyramids, and the countless amount of cathedrals scattered all over the island make it seem that just by walking through the island you are reading a history book.
To fly to Malta, you only need a £2 train to Birmingham airport, that is cheaper than the U1 to Leam.
