A Message from Your Officer Team
Context
At Warwick Students’ Union, we are aware of the organised racist and Islamophobic riots that have taken place across the UK in the past few days based on misinformation that has been circulating online. We are particularly aware of the impact of these events upon our students, most of whom are off campus. Members of our community (especially our Muslim and International students) are rightly worried about the safety of themselves, their friends and their family after seeing the racialised violence and divisive rhetoric unfold in person and online.
Our Stance
The hate speech driven by the extremist far-right has led to the dehumanisation of people of colour, Muslims, and migrants across Britain. Reiterating our existing values, policies (no.165 and no.77) and active campaigns (like Stand Up Against Islamophobia), we strongly condemn any and all acts or statements that threaten the safety of our members, especially those who are Muslim, immigrants, or belong to an ethnic minority.
Support Available
We have a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination including Islamophobia and racism, and urge our members to reach out to us if they are being targeted. We would like to offer our support to the students who might have been affected by the ongoing violence, and reaffirm our commitment to fostering an antiracist and welcoming environment here at Warwick.
If you or someone you know has been affected by the recent attacks, please reach out to our support networks:
We understand that this is a very distressing time for many in our community, and we hope that action is taken promptly by the political leadership in order to tackle these crimes at their roots.
