“In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you."
This Oscar-winning masterpiece is a genre-defying film that blends sci-fi, action, comedy, and heartfelt family drama. The unique blend is a direct reflection of the film’s wacky, heartbreaking plot. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the film stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Wang, a Chinese immigrant who co-owns a laundromat with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and has a strained relationship with her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu). Her world is falling apart as her relationship with her daughter grows worse, her marriage is crumbling, and her laundromat is being audited. However, her mundane existence is soon shattered when she learns she can travel across infinite universes, each reflecting a different life she could have lived, and each forcing her to deal with her own personal struggles in life.
The film itself manages to blend its comedy with narrative, as the film's unique environments lend themselves brilliantly to the intended punchline. The action is fantastically choreographed, blending in with the stunning visual style created by Kwan and Scheinert. Though the film’s most phenomenal execution comes through its emotional journey. At its core, the film explores intergenerational trauma, the immigrant experience, and the overwhelming suffocation of parental expectations. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a deeply moving story about love and connection, and its perfectly crafted emotional beats are where the movie thrives. [Lilly-Ella McCarthy]
