Society Sessions! #3

To round off Term 1, I attended sessions from Warwick Strings, Krishna Conciousness Society, Warwick AI and TedxWarwick! Here's how I found them...

Warwick Strings – Rehearsal (11/11/21) – 5:00pm

I had the pleasure of attending a weekly rehearsal undertaken by Warwick’s premier student-led strings group – Warwick Strings! The conducting and the session was facilitated Raina, and the group were hard at work practising for their upcoming performances. After the midway break, I also had a go at playing! However, as someone who has not touched a violin in five years, trying to play the pieces from scratch was quite a fruitless task… I want to thank Raina for inviting me to their session!

Krishna Consciousness Society – Reincarnation. The Debate (11/11/21) – 6:30pm-9:00pm

Debating the meaning of life and the possibility of reincarnation isn’t something that I normally do, but after an evening with the Krishna Consciousness Society (KCS), I left with more questions about the topic than I did at the start! Following an assortment of fun party games, a fiery debate ensued where everyone separated into two teams, with one side arguing for and the other against the idea of reincarnation. Debating isn’t my forte, but it was entertaining to watch how each side responded to different ideas about the issue. The event was rounded off with a society-led presentation on the topic. Thanks to Dhaval for the invitation!

Warwick AI - Why AI Poses a Threat to Humanity (12/11/21) – 6:00pm-7:00pm

Whilst artificial intelligence (AI) is something I wouldn’t usually be interested in, Joe (the President of Warwick AI) did a good job in the hour he had in convincing me otherwise. In a packed one-hour session in the Oculus, Joe presented a convincing argument as to why Artificial General Intelligence may pose an existential threat to us. A vibrant Q&A section followed where fellow students debated issues stemming from the talk, which I found it incredibly fascinating. Thank you, Joe, for inviting me to the event!

TEDxWarwick - TEDxWarwick Salon - Press Play (15/11/21) – 6:00pm

I managed to drop by a couple of talks held by Warwick Alumni who were all invited to give TEDx talks about specialist topics. The talks ranged from minority representation in media and society in general, to the incredible potential of seaweed in contributing to the battle against climate change. I found the time I spent there incredibly interesting, illuminating important global issues and providing potential solutions to said problems. I want to thank the TEDxWarwick exec for inviting me to this event!
