Event from Warwick Student Cinema

L3

Come see Reservoir Dogs projected on stunning 35mm film on the big screen in L3!

Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino’s feature-length directorial debut, is a tense and unconventional crime film that takes the heist genre and flips it on its head. Whilst we don’t experience the robbery itself, the film focuses on the results and aftermath of a gone-wrong diamond heist. Tarantino’s trademark snappy dialogue and writing is another standout strength, making the characters feel relatable while also building suspense. The non-chronological structure of this film also gradually reveals key details, keeping the audience engaged whilst also questioning everything they know, as more and more shocking details are revealed. Despite its low budget, the film is visually impressive. Most of the action takes place in a stand-alone warehouse hideout, yet it never feels stagnant. Instead, the confined setting increases the claustrophobic atmosphere, intensifying the mistrust and anxiety of the criminals. One of the film’s strongest features is how each character is presented. Each individual robber, identified by the audience through colour-coded pseudonyms, feels unique and memorable. Mr. White’s conflicted loyalty, Mr. Orange’s emotional vulnerability, and Mr. Blonde’s chilling psychopathy creates constant tension, as these fiery personalities mix. The infamous torture scene, to an upbeat soundtrack, also perfectly captures the film’s ability to mix dark humour with effortless storytelling.

Overall, Reservoir Dogs is a bold and career-defining film that perfectly showcases Tarantino’s world-renowned style. Its sharp writing, memorable characters, and gripping structure make it a must-watch for fans of later Tarantino films or crime cinema. [Harrison Jay]
