Warwick Student Cinema: Akira - Early

Event from Warwick Student Cinema

Saturday 30 May 2026, 6.30PM - Saturday 30 May 2026, 8.30PM

Come see Akira presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

If you are interested in retro Japanese animation, motorbikes and a post-apocalyptic world in which war and violence have seized the nation and its inhabitants then Akira, the action-packed cyber punk film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is for you. The cult classic film became a landmark film for Japan, as well as helping to popularise the animated film format while influencing future TV, film and media for years to come. The film depicts Tokyo 31 years after World War III (now dubbed Neo-Tokyo). Within the city, two biker gangs are at war of their own making: the Capsules, led by Kaneda, and their rival gang the Clowns. When Kaneda’s best friend, Tetsuo, is caught in the midst of a government experiment failure gone rogue and is injured, he finds himself developing psychic powers. Instead of using his newfound power for good, Tetsuo uses it for his own malicious desires. In fear that he will destroy Tokyo; it is up to Kaneda to help both his city and his friend.

The animated film has become popular with its famous ‘Akira slide’ that has been used in countless films and shows, with the single shot becoming the face of the film and the go to motorbike stunt. This film has beautiful animation, a thrilling story and a tale of morality and friendship that is bound to entrance you. [Mason Stannard-Parages]
