Starring Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito, this is Miloş Forman's all-time classic adaptation of Ken Kasey’s 1962 novel. The development of this film is a slow but fascinating story and bears importantly on Forman’s own aptness to direct it. After Kirk Douglas made several failed attempts to adapt the novel throughout the 60s, he approached Forman on a tour in Czechoslovakia in 1969. The two, however, were prevented from making any progress on the film due to Soviet censorship in the country. Eventually, after having fled to the US in 1973, Forman was hired by Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz to direct it. This came as somewhat of a miraculous turn of events for Forman who was now given the opportunity, unbeknownst to him at the time, to direct the same film Michael Douglas’ father, Kirk had intended for him to direct four years earlier. Forman was personally invested in Kasey’s story due to his own experiences of growing up and living in Soviet-controlled Czechoslovakia. This provides a possible allegorical reading of the film as well as further vitalising its presentation of power relations and resistance. Tragic yet optimistic and bittersweet, this film is simply not one to miss. [Felix da Silva]
