All Student Vote (Spring 2025)

Warwick SU to support Muslim, Arab and Palestinian students in face of Islamophobic and racist attacks

A motion to condemn the personal attacks geared to Palestinian, Arabs and Muslim on campus and actively protect their freedom of expression as articulated in international law.

This union notes:

  1. Palestinian and pro Palestine, Arabs and Muslim students have been targetted disproportionately for their support for the Palestinian struggle. (https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20231018-uks-soas-suspends-students-following-a-solidarity-rally-for-gaza/amp/)

  1.  Palestinian students, Arabs and Muslims have a right to articulate their oppression in the terms they see fit, a right affirmed by the MacPherson Principle.

  1. Palestinian students, Arabs and Muslims have a right to lawful freedom of expression.

This union believes:

  1. The students’ union and the university have a duty of care to its Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students who are facing racialised, Islamophobic targeting after expressing support for the Palestinian struggle.

  1. The union is an inclusive space that fosters political debate, threats to the safety of those partaking in political activism should be taken seriously.

  1. Neither the university nor the union should capitulate to tactics of intimidation aimed at silencing Palestinian, Arabs and Muslim of pro Palestine students.

The Union revolves:

  1. To write a statement condemning the threats of safety to Palestinian, Arabs and Muslims on campus which is rooted in a long history of Islamophobia.

  1. The SU to support and not demonise Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims when they have voiced the oppression they and Palestinians have faced, both on campus and in Palestine.

  1. To condemn the personal attacks geared to Palestinian, Arabs and Muslim on campus and actively protect their freedom of expression as articulated in international law.

  1. The SU to be committed and make clear their support for Palestinian students and those living in occupied Palestine and in Gaza.

  1. To support and protect Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims on campus when they’re hosting events, demos and other forms of expression which doesn’t further endanger their safety and wellbeing but actively supports them.

  1. To reaffirm the APG defintion of Islamophobia by committing that any form of targeting, doxing and attacks (physical and verbal, both online and in person) on Palestinians, Arabs and Muslim (including student societies/groups) who voice their support on Palestine is Islamophobic and will be taken seriously
