Come see Monster presented with stunning 4K laser projection on the big screen in L3!

What now seems like a lifetime ago (in reality, in 2024), I went to see the newly released Monster at none other than Warwick Student Cinema. Monster was very possibly my first encounter with Japanese cinema and, safe to say, I was blown away. Even now, after having delved deeper into Japan’s remarkable cinematic history, Monster has remained a modern touchstone for me. However, what makes Hirokazu Kore-eda’s most recent film so good? Monster primarily concerns the relationship between schoolchildren Minato and Yori, and is told through a triptych of perspectives, being that of their schoolteacher, Minato’s mother, and Minato himself. As is traditional for Kore-eda, the film is aesthetically stunning, while Yuji Sakamoto’s script handles its coming-of-age genre and queer themes with astonishing sensitivity. Monster’s Rashomon-esque structure was also a particular watershed moment for me, as Kore-eda and Sakamoto illuminate cinema’s breathtaking ability to explore and challenge perspective. In all honesty, I struggle to criticise Monster; Kore-eda’s style may be emotionally overwhelming for some, but his latest film remains an unambiguous masterpiece of modern world cinema. [Sam Ripley]
