Off the backs of the animated Spider-Verse franchise, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller produce and direct the masterpiece that is Project Hail Mary. Adapted from Andy Weir’s book of the same name, Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) on an interstellar journey to find a way to save the dying sun and prevent humanity’s extinction. Grace encounters a five-legged alien, which he names Rocky (voiced by James Ortiz), who’s travelled to the same place for the same reason. They quickly join forces, bonding over their shared mission and love of science. Down to incredible puppeteering from Ortiz and Gosling’s acting, their chemistry is palpable and feels like that of a lifelong friendship. The heart of the film lies within this relationship and will strike any and all emotional chords. Greig Fraser’s cinematography displays the beauty of the cosmos, complimenting Daniel Pemberton’s ethereal score to make this epic adventure one for the ages. [Jacob Martindale]
