Probably the most beloved non-Ghibli anime film and a heavy inspiration for 2010’s Black Swan, Perfect Blue is an eerie and uncomfortable look at the world of a JPop idol’s life as her grip of reality fades. Satoshi Kon highlights the layers of identities that someone in the limelight navigates through, from their media image to their fan’s skewed perceptions of them, as we see them come crashing down on Mima soon after she leaves her girl group. What follows is a part-slasher, part-psychological thriller that examines our parasocial relationships with celebrities and how far it can sometimes go. [Anant Nambiar]
