In 2018, Gerwig debuted with an on-screen translation of the beautiful ordinary that is outgrowing your hometown. Christine, who has given herself the name Lady Bird, is theatrical, melodramatic, and strong minded. This film represents the young, innocent rebellion that accompanies small-town-bound self-exploration. For me, Lady Bird’s all-too-familiar loose grapple with Catholicism mirrors the woes that accompany being a teenage girl. I believe many can align themselves with some aspect of Lady Bird’s hardships, whether that be pressured familial relationships or an ill-respected drive for greatness. [Holly Beaumont]
