Next to Normal is a deeply moving rock musical that follows the Goodman family as they cope with the effects of mental illness, loss, and the struggle to appear “normal. Diana Goodman, a mother battling bipolar disorder and unresolved grief, begins to experience worsening hallucinations. Her husband Dan is steadfast and supportive, but increasingly burdened as he tries to hold the family together. Their daughter Natalie feels neglected and overshadowed, leading her to rebel and push boundaries. Meanwhile, Gabe, Diana’s charismatic son, appears frequently — though his presence reveals itself to be more complex than it first seems. As Diana seeks treatment through doctors Dr. Madden and Dr. Fine, the show questions the ethics and impact of psychiatric care, from medication to electroconvulsive therapy. Henry, Natalie’s sweet and awkward boyfriend, brings warmth and stability but also highlights the emotional distance in the Goodman home.
