Around 30% of UK dairy cows suffer from lameness, causing various issues such as prolonged pain, difficulty walking, and threatened welfare.
There are around 40-60 cases of mastitis per 100 cows in a herd. This is a painful, undertreated disease.
2.6 million cows are exploited for milk annually, and calves are separated from their mothers within hours or days of birth.
An estimate of 60,000 male calves are shot annually because they are considered economically unuseful.
16% of UK dairy farms have adopted
“zero-graze” systems, where cows may spend their entire lives indoors with no access to outside pasture.
A large proportion of cows endure repeated pregnancies, forced milking, and are slaughtered at only 4-5 years old (when their milk yield starts to decline).
