Improving Bus Provision for Warwick Students

Local bus routes play an integral role in getting students and staff to and from campus every day. Reliable, affordable, and accessible bus services are essential for students’ ability to attend lectures, seminars, placements, jobs, and social activities.

As a Students’ Union, we regularly lobby the University, local bus companies, and local councils to push for high-quality bus services that meet students’ needs.

NX vs Stagecoach: Who Runs What?

Two main operators serve the University of Warwick campus:

  • Stagecoach: Runs the primary routes connecting Leamington Spa and campus (including the U1 and U1A).
  • National Express (NX): Operates services connecting Coventry, Canley, and Kenilworth to campus (including the 12X, 11, and 14).
Impacts on Students

Service reliability and affordability have a huge impact on student life and wellbeing:

  • Academic & Social Disruption: Delays and cancellations cause students to miss vital lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, and extracurriculars.
  • Cost of Living: Bus passes are a substantial financial burden, with passes reaching upwards of £500, adding intense pressure during an ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
  • Safety & Wellbeing: Cancelled services leave students stranded in the cold and dark, especially during winter terms. Overcrowded bus stops and massive queues also present severe safety and accessibility hazards—disproportionately impacting disabled students, those with mobility aids, and student parents.
Public Control: WMCA & Bus Franchising

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), led by the Mayor of the West Midlands, is moving bus services currently run by National Express into public control through a process known as bus franchising.

This shift to public control represents a major opportunity for the Students’ Union to secure transformative wins for students travelling to and from Coventry, including greater accountability, integrated ticketing, and fairer fares.

What Are Students Experiencing?

Through our surveys and direct student voice feedback, students consistently report key challenges across campus routes:

  • Reliability & Frequency: Inconsistent timetables, phantom buses, and cancellations.
  • Capacity at Peak Times: Full buses driving past stops during morning rush hours, leaving students stranded.
  • Route Alterations: Short-notice route changes and service reductions.
  • Communication: Inadequate live updates when delays or cancellations occur.
  • Affordability: Rising fares that do not reflect service quality.

These challenges fall hardest on students living further from campus, those who rely entirely on public transport, and students with accessibility requirements who cannot walk or cycle.

Where Do We Want to Be?

Warwick SU believes every student is entitled to affordable, safe, accessible, and dependable public transport. Our core campaign demands are:

  1. High-Capacity, Reliable Stagecoach Services: Target over 50% student satisfaction (or parity with NX in the transport survey) through increased peak frequency.
  2. Fairer Pass Prices: Reduce the price of the UniRider bus pass and prevent further steep price hikes.
  3. Coventry Night Shuttles & PBSA Routes: Dedicated late-night travel provision between campus, Coventry, and major Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) areas.
  4. Attendance & Mitigating Circumstances Protection: Reasonable adjustments and leniency for missed monitoring points or seminars caused by proven bus delays.
  5. Free Student Travel: Lobbying for free bus travel for all students within the West Midlands Combined Authority.

How Are We Working to Get There?

We combine active lobbying of operators and local authorities with hard evidence collected directly from student surveys. Your Full-Time Officer team is leading the charge across key areas:

Stagecoach reliability, frequency & capacity
Ronny Whetton
Bus pass affordability & fare freezes
Harri Paget
Night-time shuttle provision & PBSA route access
Ollie Chapman (President)
WMCA bus franchising & free student travel
Raj Hacker
Mitigating circumstances & attendance policy adjustments

What Have We Done So Far?

Duplicated Peak Buses

Secured a commitment from Stagecoach to schedule duplicate buses on key timeslots during early term weeks to alleviate morning peak crowding.

Late-Night Parish Church Stops

Addressed dangerous service deviations where late-night buses bypassed Leamington Parish Church, forcing students to walk home in the dark. This has now been rectified—if a bus fails to stop here, report it immediately to Stagecoach and the SU.

Official Operator Acknowledgement

Through formal representations to the University and Stagecoach leadership, we secured an official written apology and formal pledges toward service improvement.

Electric Depot Infrastructure Expansion

Pressured Stagecoach to accelerate charging infrastructure upgrades at their central depot, minimizing last-minute fleet cancellations caused by uncharged vehicles.

Operator-Specific Transport Surveying

Successfully lobbied the University to split its annual transport survey by operator (Stagecoach vs National Express). This revealed a stark 45% satisfaction gap between operators, giving the SU precise data to hold operators to account.

Have Your Say & Share Feedback

To hold bus companies accountable, every delay, cancellation, and missed journey needs to be officially logged.

Help the SU Build Evidence

The SU uses student stories and evidence directly in meetings with operators and University executives. If bus problems have affected your studies, wellbeing, or budget, please email us at studentvoice@warwicksu.com with details of your journey (and note if you're happy for your comments to be quoted anonymously in lobbying discussions).
