Warwick SU for Safe and Sensible Drug Policy - The 'For' case

It’s fairly common knowledge amongst the majority of the student body that there are several student nights in Leamington, as well as the local area, where it is common practice to take drugs instead of drink alcohol. Many Warwick students attend these events. There have been several instances where students have taken drugs that were not as advertised and have had negative experiences, the most extreme of which have landed people in hospital.

Whilst Warwick SU does not condone the use of illegal drugs, as stated in the motion, the welfare of our students is of utmost importance. Some will continue to take drugs throughout their time here, regardless of the potential dangers. Therefore we are responsible for enabling those students to make an informed decision of the drugs they take.

There has been a growing number of media cases in recent years reporting student deaths following consumption of MDMA. However, in most instances the deaths were caused by something called para-Methoxyamphetamine. PMA is more poisonous than MDMA and can kill at lower doses. This is gravely concerning as the drug takes a longer time to have an effect on the body, therefore users may take another dose, which can be fatal. The Neuropsychopharmachologist, Professor David Nutt states PMA can be up to ten times more potent than MDMA.

Several students’ unions have already adopted a safe, sensible and progressive stance towards drugs. Sussex, Manchester, and Newcastle all allow students to buy drug-testing kits. Furthermore, music festivals such as Reading, Leeds, Kendall Calling, and Secret Garden party had onsite drug testing facilities this year, with the latter receiving support from the local police and the local council. The kits cost £3.49 each if bought individually, or £1.80 per test if more than 40 are purchased at any one time.

We cannot stop those students who desire to take drugs from doing so, but we can produce an environment in which they are able to more safely. I’m calling on you to vote FOR this motion. Vote FOR a sensible and safe drug policy, and enable students to make an informed, safe decision about the substances they consume.
