Here's a quick update on all the work being done by your Full-Time Student Officers to prepare for students returning to campus:

  • Working with the University to consider installing temporary covered structures around campus for a variety of uses, including society and club events
  • Proving input on Online Teaching provision, and working with the University to produce resources to support students in the transition to learning online
  • Working with the University and the SU team to establish new study and dwell space locations to make up for reduced capacities in the Library and Learning Grids due to social distancing
  • Ensuring the University are liaising with bus companies to properly manage bus demand, including spreading out timetabling to reduce demand at peak time, and managing queues
  • Working with the SU Commercial team to plan social events during Welcome Week and throughout term
  • Putting together plans and scenarios for the reopening of SU food and drink outlets, to ensure they can meet demand from students on campus whilst being COVID-safe
  • Supporting societies and clubs to organise virtual events ahead of Welcome Week to engage those students who are quarantining on campus
  • Working with the University on the potential expansion of study space in Leamington, reducing the need for students to travel onto campus
  • Supporting the library in their communication to students around the reopening of Learning Grids and the main University library
  • Meeting with UCU to address the major cuts to the sessional teaching budget and their response to online teaching
  • Setting up training for both new and returning Course Reps and SSLC Chairs
  • Working with societies to create a virtual events calendar for students quarantined on campus
  • Putting together guidance for clubs and societies to support on-campus activities
  • Working towards getting all sports clubs some outdoor facility space so they can at least get some fitness training even if it isn’t an exact replica of their usual indoor activities
  • Worked with Warwick Sport to provide a cheaper 6-month gym membership for those returning students who still have their memberships from last academic year carrying them through until November.

Notable pieces of information regarding return to campus:

  • The University has given assurances (and these have now been communicated to students) that international students will not need to be on campus until Term 2 if they cannot make it
  • The University will be requiring students and staff to wear face coverings in any enclosed indoor spaces, and staff will be provided with face shields
  • The University have identified 'pinch points' around campus, and are planning to implement one-way systems to aid with social distancing
  • University House Learning Grid has now reopened, with other study spaces planning to open soon and ahead of Welcome Week
  • International students will be able to move into on-campus accommodation from 9th September so that they can quarantine for 14 days ahead of Welcome Week – any students this applies to should have received a form by email to submit for early arrivals
  • Additional buses are being acquired by stagecoach to meet heightened demand as a result of social distancing regulations
  • Sports and Societies Fairs will be completely virtual, and will take place 10am-5pm on Tuesday 29th (Sports) and 10am-5pm on Wednesday 30th (Societies)
  • Warwick Sport have assured us that outdoor activities can resume from the start of term, with some local leagues resuming from October.

If there’s anything you’re concerned about that you’d like us to raise with the University, or anything you think might have been left off this summary, please do let the relevant Officer know! If you’re not sure who to contact, drop enquiries@warwicksu.com an email and they’ll forward it on to the appropriate Officer.
