As an SU we are pleased to see that the Government has finally U-turned on their disastrous A Level algorithm and awarded students the centre assessed grades they deserve. The algorithm downgraded 40% of grades for students, though this was seen much more harshly at state schools than private ones. The classist and racist grades that were released last Thursday were wholly unacceptable. We support all students who protested against such a decision leading to this victory.

However, this U-turn is too little, too late for students from lower income backgrounds who, as a result of their Ofqual moderated grades, went on to take up an insurance or clearing place rather than a place at their first-choice University, Warwick. These same students were also less likely to appeal their grades due to the extortionate costs and lack of confidence in navigating the system.

As a result of this we ask that the University continue to reach out to those students it rejected last Thursday and offer them places based on their new centre assessed grades. We have received assurances that this process is ongoing, and will keep the student body updated on this. We urge the University to make this clear on their website to reduce confusion and stress on prospective students during this troubled time. Given that student number caps have been lifted by the Government, there are no barriers limiting the University from doing this.

We recognise concerns around centre assessed grades, with them often also being racist and ableist due to potential teacher bias. The SU will continue to fight against educational injustice wherever it is found, whether it affects students while they are with us, or prior to their arrival.
