Warwick ASEAN Conference
The Warwick ASEAN Conference began in 2015 as a platform for students in the UK, mostly of the ASEAN diaspora, to come together to discuss the impact of the then-upcoming ASEAN Economic Community. Into its third year, the Warwick ASEAN Conference aims to spur a contest of ideas on the region’s past, present and future. Our theme for 2017, “Survival and Identity Beyond 50”, aims to do that through a reassessment of the institution for which the conference is named after. The date for the third instalment of the conference is on the 18th of February 2017 at the newly built Oculus building in The University of Warwick. Moving away from the cliché conference structure, this year’s WAC will also include personalised workshops by big firms with the aim of providing a platform for discussion on ASEAN related career prospects. Tickets are on sale now! For more details, head to the official website of WAC at http://warwickaseanconference.com/.
The conference and the new initiatives are aimed at reaching out to students of all nationalities in the UK who are curious about Southeast Asia. Our goal is to inspire them to truly understand this region and in turn, spread awareness and discussion about its issues and developments. With the panel discussions (economics & politics panel and human rights panel) and a special youth perspective segment, we hope that the ASEAN Conversation that we create will contribute towards nurturing the next generation of critical thinkers who will in time build the ASEAN of tomorrow, shape the region and decide its future.
This year we have introduced two new initiatives, namely the personalised workshops and our very own online publication. With the introduction of these personalised workshops, we aim to provide selected delegates with the opportunity to engage with organisations and firms that possess a strong ASEAN footprint. We believe this would add value to the participating delegates beyond the conference. These workshops can range from career-related workshops to interactive sessions that will further engage top delegates on regional affairs, which we believe will provide an excellent opportunity to understand and network beyond the scope of the conference. Over the upcoming years, Warwick ASEAN Conference aims to extend our outreach by engaging students through our various online platforms, which includes both our official website and Facebook page that boast a combined digital audience of more than 5 500 people. We hope to achieve this through frequent publications on our editorial blog, covering interviews with experts across the economic, political and socio-cultural spheres in ASEAN, as well as opinion pieces from our very own student community at the University of Warwick. Additionally, our editorial blog will feature highlights of current affairs in the ASEAN region, which we hope will not only raise awareness and interest, but also facilitate thought-provoking discussions about key ASEAN issues.
