Described in 1974 as "The most highly acciamed horrot phantasy of our time", Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise is a cult classic if there ever was one. A mash up of Phantom of the Opera, Faust and Dorian Gray, Phantom of the Paradise finds De Palma discovering himself. The classic trademarks are all present: the hitchcock homages, split screen and arresting steadicam shots, all wrapped up in a rock opera. Starring William Finley as Winslow, a composer whose music is stolen by record tycoon Swan, played by Paul Williams (who also wrote all the film's music), so he can open his rock palace: The Paradise. Jessica Harper stars as Phoenix, the girl Winslow is in love with, a role that would get in her cast in Dario Argento's Suspiria. A genre mix of horror and musical, Phantom of the Paradise also acts as a scathing critique of the music industry.
Stay for the end credits to hear one of the greatest end credit songs ever put to screen. Also look out for De Palma's homage to Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, presented in a way only De Palma would do...
