Phase 1
“The back of the building”
Summer 2008 – Spring 2009
This phase concentrates on the new venue at the back of the development. During this phase we will loose the Cooler & Battered, the Graduate, the Graduate Club, South Central, Advance and a large part of the Marketplace. However until the end of Term 3 we will keep the Graduate, South Central, and the Graduate Club.
During Phase 1 we will be operating a 500 capacity club in what is now Grumpy John’s bar and will also incorporate the space currently occupied by STA travel, Endsleigh and the Oxfam shop. These works will take place over the summer and so the club will be ready for the start of Freshers 2008. We are hoping to carry on several of our current popular nights whilst starting up a whole bunch of new ones to give a sneak preview of what the new venue will have inside it.
This club will be run as a separate venue from Cholo.Cholo will still provide plenty of space for people to relax with a beer from the bar, a coffee from Rococo’s as well as a revised daytime food offer incorporating healthy eating, grab and go and hot food..
Cholo will have the Graduate @ Cholo and a new hot food offer in Union South, with a capacity of around 400 people. It is obviously not the same as what we have at the moment and nothing compared to what we will have after the redevelopment but it is still significantly more than almost every other Students’ Union in the country. We will be also making sure that the “Grumpy John’s” space is booked out two nights a week for society events so we make sure that this integral part of the Union is not lost for this period.
The Entertainments department have also been looking at a myriad other opportunities and provisions that we might be able to give Freshers in 2008. Everything from providing buses to near by Leamington or Cov to putting on nights in conjunction with other venues is up for discussion so watch this space.
Phase 2
“The rest…”
Spring 2009 – September 2009
Phase 2 deals with the massive plans for expanding the front half of the building. This includes the Terrace Bar, the Piazza Café, the new societies club and the brand new atrium running through the middle of the building. During this phase we will lose Rococo, Quench, Cholo, Grumpy John’s and most of the Piazza
After the back of the building is completed we move onto the front half which is going to look over the Piazza and provide the modern, classy and comfortable setting that our members expect from their Union building.
