Editing Your Web Space

Your union's website offers you some good opportunities to communicate with your members, students at Warwick, and the wider world. The ways of using and exploiting these to the best effect are explained here.

At the moment there are a few things that are still in the process of being created by our clever IT people.... but rest assured that as soon as they're ready for you, you'll hear about them. However for now there are two great ways to get involved with the union website - your own society website and your public noticeboard.

Please note:

In order to take advantage of these features, you must be registered as an exec member of your society. This is done after you submit your Exec Sheet after elections. If you are having difficulties, ensure that you have filled in your Exec Sheet and handed it in to the Resources Room so that your exec members can be given the correct powers. If you still have problems, please email Pam or the SSDO.

Your Public Noticeboard

This is the page that people get to when they click your society's name on the 'View All Societies' link on the main Societies webpage. It is pretty easy to edit and put to use, and is immediately accessed by all those that click on your society's name. In order to edit this, follow these steps:

1. Log into the Union website (at the top right corner of any of its pages).

2. Click on the Societies tab on the left hand side of the page.

3. Click on 'View All Societies'. Find your society and click on its name.

4. You should now be on the page for your society. At the top right you should see 'Edit Public Noticeboard' Click this to get to the web noticeboard editor.

5. You can choose to go for the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, in which you can type, change fonts, add pictures etc using the toolbars. Alternatively if you're a bit of a dab hand with writing code for websites you can choose 'HTML Code' and edit the code of the noticeboard directly.

If you are having any difficulties with this, first check the note in the blue box above, and if you're still having trouble, email Pam the Societies Administrator, or Tom Lindsay, the SSDO.

Your Website

On the page that people get to after clicking on your society's name under 'View All Societies', there is a link to your society website. This is typically http://www.sunion.warwick.ac.uk/socs/su999 with your society code instead of 999. Editing this relies on you having written the website already and simply having the files ready to upload.

The W: Drive

1. Log in to a computer in the Resources Room as your society.

2. Go to 'My Computer' on the Start menu, and you should find the W: drive.

3. Upload your files to the W: drive, and name the home page of your website default.html

ftp

If you want to upload files from home and are familiar with ftp, you can also upload your website that way. The address for that is ftp.sunion.warwick.ac.uk - you will need to log in with your society code and password.
