Our society aims to unite those that are part of a Third Culture; one that is neither the individual's or their parents', but a third one. The Third Culture Society is one that allows for students to feel more at home and to share their experiences with people of similar backgrounds. It is often hard to be thrown into a world where not everyone has experienced a third culture upbringing, like university, and this society hopes to create some sort of a familiar base for those making that crucial transition.
"A Third Culture Kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK's life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background"

Being a Third Culture Kid (or Adult Third Culture Kids) is often synonymous with having attended international schools. Many members of the society have therefore attended international schools all over the world. The society is an opportunity to find mutual friends in our impressively small world.
We also aim to create a community in which global events and cultural diversities are promoted, in an effort to establish equality of interpretation and understanding. In the coming year, we hope to increase events and socials related to this aim.
The society should also be viewed as a platform for people to meet new people and share global cultural experiences. While we do stand to raise awareness of the distinction between International students and Third Culture students, seeing as Third Culture students may not come from their passport country, nor feel able to fully identify with people from their passport country, we also aim to encourage anyone who is interested in the topic of global multiculturalism and transnationalism to join. Last year, approximately 40% of our members did not have a Third Culture background. While the majority will remain Third Culture Kids, the society wishes to ensure that the social environment is purposively inclusive.

Last year saw the Third Culture Society improve enormously. With increasingly large membership numbers, we have socials every fortnight. Certain traditions, such as the German Birmingham Christmas Market and a Summer BBQ, are definite. We also are proudly sponsored be LeDiCe International Student Night at Saints Bar in Leamington Spa, so have regular socials there. The coming year will hopefully see a lot of progression, and new events, so keep your eyes peeled for updates and promotions. We hope to also keep you informed of international events across the university that may be of interest to Third Culture Kids (TCKs). We will be starting the new year running, and look forward to meeting all the freshers and new members!
