Societies - New Writing

 NEW WRITING SOCIETY

Welcome to the New Writing Society! Technically we're not so new anymore, as this is our third year running, but we like to hang on to our youth.

We provide a forum for writers of all genres - poetry, prose, screen-writing, script-writing, improvisational stand-up, whatever you do we're into it and we'll help you put your ideas on paper. Or on a computer screen, depending on how you work best.

We have informal meetings on Mondays at 7 in Bar Fusion (above Costa Coffee) where we can talk about books, authors, ideas, and whatnot, as well as play writing games and generally have a good time and get to know each other as people. Not to fear though, we'll also be having proper socials arranged by Naomi, since she is the Social Secretary and that's her job.

Our formal meetings - the ones where we do the writing - take place on Wednesdays at 2. In Term 1, we'll be in H543 - top floor of the Humanities building, right at the end. In Term 2, we'll be in MR6 in the SUHQ (next to Costcutters and up the stairs). Term 3 is still to be decided, since that is the dreaded exam term and we will all be ridiculously busy.

One very important thing you should know is that we produce a magazine called INK every term. You can submit your work to us at nwinksubmissions@gmail.com, even if you're not currently a member!

Well, now all that's out of the way, let me introduce the Exec team.

I'm Helen, the President; not much explanation of my role needed, I expect!

Naomi, as I mentioned before, is our fabulous Social Secretary and entrusted with everybody's happiness on our nights out.

Jackie is our Treasurer and resident cat-lover; she takes care of the money and makes sure we don't spend it on ukuleles.

Ben is the Poetry Editor of INK magazine and has been in the society with me for all three years. He sings and plays ukuleles. He's also our First Aider, so if you stab yourself with a fountain pen report to him immediately.

Chris and Jess B are the Prose Editors of INK magazine, having formed an alliance after several decades of bloody civil war.

Jess H is our Equal Opps Officer and will deal with any complaints of discrimination, e.g. against ukulele players.

That's all from us at New Writing - we hope to see you at our next meeting.

Happy writing!
