We exist for anyone interested in Buddhism, and are not affilated to any particular school or tradition.
Activities
The society holds weekly mediation sessions on Mondays from 6:15 - 8:00 pm led by Ajahn Khemadhammo, a Theravadin monk with over 40 years of experience from the Forest Hermitage in nearby Sherbourne. Ajahn Khemadhammo was trained by the late and great Ajahn Chah of What Nong Pah Pong in Thailand.
These sessions are open to everyone, beginners or more experienced meditators, are completely free of charge and without any further obligations. We tend to sit for about 45 minutes, then Ajahn Khemadhammo will give a dhamma-talk about various aspects of Buddhism and then we sit for another little while. Afterwards there will be time for questions.
The sessions alternate between the Chaplaincy and a smaller seminar-sized room, usually S0.09. Check the website, Twitter page or Facebook group for information on where the session shall be held each week!
We arrange trips to a local Buddhist Temple for some of the major Buddhist festivals. There will be more activities coming up, so stay tuned to our web site, follow us on Twitter or join the Facebook group for updated info!
Joining Buddsoc
Societies Fair has been and gone, but it never too late to join!
You can join our society at any moment throughout the year. We often worry that everyone will know each other, and don't want to be on your own when everyone else appears to know what they are doing. Well never fear, we have new members coming along to our meditation classes almost every week. Many people just want to experience a mediation class lead by a Buddhist monk for the first time. Whatever your interests feel free to contact us or just turn up to our classes, there will always be a member of the exec there to help any new people out.
All are welcome to join the Buddhist society. You can join either by going to Union North and asking at reception, or you can join online right here from the comfort of your PC, just click on the link below and the university system will guide you through the membership process.
If joining online, note that everyone with a university card no. should choose 'Standard Membership', and anyone else should choose 'Associate Membership'.
You do not need to be a member of the Societies' Federation to join the Buddhist Society.
