Get involved!
We are currently running a range of campaigns and fundraising activities and we always need a helping hand! Our focus for the moment is fundraising for the Coventry HOPE fund which finances a range of refugee projects. We have successfully helped Coventry Refugee Centre with the film making of Hope Fund Promotion video and the result is coming soon!
Contact us at STARatWarwick@gmail.com to let us know how you want to be involved or just chat to any of us at one of the next events! We can also help you out in finding volunteering opportunities in Coventry and surroundings!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to Warwick STAR!
Let us introduce ourselves...
STAR is a national network of young people and university based student groups aiming to
-
raise awareness of refugee and asylum issues
-
campaign for the rights of refugees
-
and practically support refugees and asylum seekers through volunteering in the local community.
We are a very active society and always start new things! In the last years we organised loads of stuff, for example:
-
plays and aftershow parties
-
debates
-
conferences (with MPs and other representatives)
-
parties and socials (we invite the asylum seekers in Peace House to have a lovely dinner with the members at Warwick University)
-
action days (sleep out with Amnesty)
-
cinema showings
-
housing projects
We have also collaborate with many local organisations to provide our members with wide range of volunteering opportunities, for example:
-
Volunteer at a night shelter for destitute asylum seekers, Coventry Peace House
-
Volunteer at Coventry Refugee & Migrants Centre as a caseworker, befriender, or join their women & men's group
-
Volunteer teaching English for Refugees, a project under Coventry City of Sanctuary Action Group
...and we're planning much more for this year!
"With STAR, you get a bit of everything. You might have other societies that just do volunteering, or just do campaigning. STAR does everything and you get to be really involved in it. You get a real role, it’s not like you’re expected to just turn up and watch. You get to be really active – you can campaign, volunteer or organise events. You can just get involved in whatever area you want so there is really something for everyone"
Sarah Gibbons, Former VP of Volunteering Warwick STAR
Got an idea? We'd love to hear it!
