Shakespeare

The University of Warwick Shakespeare Society is a new society, founded in 2008. Given our close proximity to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, the founding students felt that the University needed our own society dedicated to The Bard.

We actively encourage new members to bring new thoughts and ideas to the society where it will be our priority to provide the opportunity for their voices to be heard.

The purpose of this new society, run by students, is to provide a high standard of experiential education for both audience and participants. We aim to demonstrate that Shakespeare's plays and poetry can be accessible to a wide range of students, academics, regular theatre goers and people who have yet to experience his work. Our intention is to educate young people from University students to school children about Shakespeare and his legacy, with particular focus on Shakespeare in the modern world, through workshops and guest speakers. This society therefore functions as a means through which to enthuse and inspire its students.

The society provides opportunities to learn more about him, to see plays, to visit museums and archives and to relate Shakespeare to contemporary society. We encourage the involvement of those whose interests lie within the literary side of education and learning as well as those who want to be part of the performance process.
