The Democracy Committee
The role of the Democracy Committee is not to run the
Union's democratic system (that being the responsibility of various
individual Officers and of the Elections
Group) but rather to provide oversight and review of both the
system itself and of the work of those running the system. The
importance to the Union of understanding and reflecting the needs
and views of its membership makes this a vital role.
As one of the Union's Standing
Committees, the responsibilities of the Democracy Committee
are:
- to co-ordinate the Union's democratic processes in the long
term
- to monitor the implementation of policy with respect to the
democratic processes of the Union
- to monitor (but not order) the work of the Elections
Group
- to regularly review the appendices to the Union's Constitution
and the Union's regulations
in order to ensure consistency with the Union's aims and
policies
- to present suggested changes to the appendices of the Union's
Constitution to Union
Council
- to present suggested changes to the Union's regulations to the
Executive
Committee
- to make Officers aware of their remits and mandates
The voting members of the committee are:
Meetings are also normally attended by the Chair of the
Elections
Group and the Chair and Deputy Chair of Union
Council
