Student Community Representatives
Are you interested in helping both your fellow students, whilst giving something back to your local community? Do you need a CV boost? If so, you will be interested in the pilot Student Community Representatives volunteer scheme we are running this term.
  • Can you volunteer approximately 4 hours a week from now until the end of Term 2 (19th March 2010)?
  • Can you be a positive representative of Warwick students, and the union, to the wider community?
  • Are you organised, reliable and committed to make a difference?
  • Do you live in South Leamington?
  • Do you think you could help set up and run an effective project?
The aim of our student community reps scheme is to act as a conduit for communication between Warwick students, the students’ union, and the non-student community in the South Leamington area.

The job will be twofold: firstly, to interact with students in the area, actively seeking out their views and problems they’re facing; secondly, to attend community meetings and represent the students in your area to the non-student community. The reps will, all working together, run a joint campaign towards the end of Term 2 on an important issue that has arisen from their findings.

You would be expected to support students in South Leam with information about safety and security, housing, and the environment. This will involve building constructive relationships with students in the area, and a generally practical and upbeat demeanour. You will also be needed to dispel negative myths about students to the wider community, promoting the good work that students do (in volunteering, for example) at neighbourhood and community residents’ meetings.

You would have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the lives of all residents in the South Leam community, by aiding communication both ways between students and non-student residents. You would also improve your ability to work in a team, and gain a valuable insight into how communities, along with their multi-agency projects, really work. We will provide all of the volunteers training, support and expenses to cover their work.

To learn more about what we are asking of you, what skills you will need, and what skills you will learn, check out the student community rep volunteer profile by clicking here.

I’m interested, what do I do now?

Please provide us with a short statement explaining why you are interested, and outline any relevant interest or experience that supports your suitability for this role – make sure to include your e-mail address, contact number, and your availability for 5-6:30pm on Tuesday week 3 (26th January 2010). If you have a CV, then you can attach that too, but it’s by no means necessary. The closing date for applications is noon on Thursday week 2 (21st January 2010), and you can submit your letter either by e-mail to community@warwicksu.com, or directly to Sami Wannell (the Welfare Officer) in SUHQ (on campus by Costcutters).
