Women's Campaigns
Hi, I’m Maddy, your Women’s Campaigns Officer for 2009/10.
How to get involved:
- Join the Facebook group ‘Women’s Campaigns at Warwick’
- OR e-mail me to be added to the mailing list
- Pop along to one of our meetings or events
The Women’s Campaigns Group are meeting throughout Term 1 to take part in various events and to plan for International Women’s Week in Week 9, Term 2. Anyone is welcome to come along at any time and take part in any way, however big or small, so feel free to drop by to anything that interests you.
Meeting times for Term 1
Week 7, Feminist T-shirt customising a la Fawcett Society. This was a lot of fun, so I’m thinking of repeating it soon!
Week 7, Reclaim the Night march in London, starts at 6pm. This was absolutely brilliant but a bit rainy! The Reclaim the Night marches are a wonderful women-only activist event which originally started way back in the 1980s. See their website for more details.
Week 8, Women's Week meeting + subvertise MR6, 4-6pm, Thursday 26 November.
Week 9, Women's Week BIG end-of-term planning meeting, 3-7pm (dropping in and out definitely allowed and encouraged) in MR4, SUHQ. This will be an epic meeting to hash out all the events we have so far for Women’s Week 2010 – this is the one to attend if you want to get involved in any way, from helping out at an event to running all the publicity!
International Warwick Women’s Week 2010 Plans so far:
Proposed Events (these are only proposals, nothing is yet set in stone)
Kick-off:
A Music/literature open mic social; possibly to tie in with a high-profile female music artist in the SU.
AND/OR
An event with a big-name speaker e.g. Germaine Greer
CRAFTS/ARTS EVENT – to make T-shirts, badges, customise clothes etc.
General plans:
ACADEMIC PROGRAM – lectures and talks on every day of the week from different departments to exist alongside “fun” and “charity” events
VAGINA MONOLOGUES performance over the course of the week; workshops leading up in advance.
WIDS CREDIT CRUNCH – a possible event linked with WIDS current work on the effect of the credit crunch on women.
PROJECT AYUDA – event on the impact of humanitarian crisis on women.
DANCE CARNIVAL – also around the impact of the credit crunch on women; audience participation and can tie in with T-shirt making.
LAW SOC MOOT, KAIROS TALK, LAW on RAPE etc – mock trial, possible event on how the law affects women with regards to violence/wider issues.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/CRASAC event – either alongside law soc event or as a separate slightly different slant.
WHITE RIBBON/MALE FEMINISTS event – last year had a huge debate on how/whether a man can be a feminist – could repeat similar this year?
GENERAL FUNDRAISING – there will be charity buckets at every event; how else can we fundraise?
END OF WEEK:
HISTORY OF FEMINISM on piazza
FEMINIST TREE/ POSTCARDS – “what does feminism mean to you?” can draw in a wider audience.
FINAL DEBATE – “What is a feminist?” or similar slant; either with debating soc or independently. To invite all lecturers and people involved in events; also a focus on the older generation of feminists meeting the younger; invite women involved in 1970s feminism and younger feminists .e.g from Object etc.
Other ideas:
MAGAZINE – we could ask all contributors to submit articles on their area of expertise; it could also contain women’s literature and poetry and articles written by students on anything to do with Women’s Week. This could be printed properly and we could charge for it to raise money?
SCHEDULE – a booklet to be printed in advance and distributed to halls and around campus the week before Women’s Week to publicise the events.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE – W.I. to come and do an event; possibly on sewing your own clothes or on their anti-violent pornography campaign.
MORE HUMANITARIAN/NON-WESTERN EVENTS – I am keen to do something on women’s education and women’s rights in other parts of the world. Could you help with this? If so email me or join the facebook group.
