Ethics and Social Justice Campaigns

Hi, I'm Fatema Karim, a 3rd Year Engineering Student, and I am your Ethics and Social Justice Campaigns Officer 2010/2011

As your Ethics and Social Justice Officer, I want to:

  • Actively promote and campaign for an ethical careers fair
  • Encourage all food outlets to provide and advertise One Water
  • Illustrate the immense benefits of simply buying One Water bottled water, as opposed to other brands because 100% of the profits go towards building wells in Africa
  • Promote Fairtrade Fortnight - with the 2011 theme being SHOW OFF YOUR LABEL (in conjunction with The Fairtrade Foundation)
  • Widen the provision and awareness of Fairtrade products on campus outlets
  • Ensuring the union remains appropriately ethical
  • Have an ongoing awareness program to highlight global poverty, for instance a child dies every 3 seconds from preventable diseases
  • Discuss the options with the university to establish a Social Responsibility statement
  • Appreciate that all students have the right to chose their career paths, and that their opportunities should not be hindered
  • Encourage the university to increase student awareness on unethical companies, and hold debates on 'what does "ethical" really mean?'

Every year waterborne diseases cause 1.5 million child deaths and deny millions more the right to be healthy. This is categorically wrong. - UNICEF

“If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” - Mother Teresa
