Environmental Campaigns 2010-2011

There are so many exciting green campaigns going on at Warwick that we would love you to be a part of.

Read on to find out more...

In October 2009 about fifteen Warwick students were involved in the incredible event, Power Shift. Power Shift was set up by the UK Youth Climate Coalition. It followed the U.S., Australia and India in bringing together hundreds of young people from around the country to explore the role of stories - of 'me, us and now' (a technique devised for Obama's election campaign). The weekend ended with a flash mob dance in parliament sqaure:

Go Green Week

Go Green is part of the People and Planet Society. It campaigns on environmental issues ranging from clean energy to composting. We aim to use innovative methods of campaigning, such as incorporating the performing arts. Go Green Week - the largest and most exciting student-run environmental campaign in the country - will take place in week 7 of term 2 this acadmic year. To get involved, contact Katy Olly or Sam Tovey on environmentcampaigns@warwicksu.com.

Student Switch Off

Want to win prizes for you and your flatmates and host an ice-cream party in your halls? Then sign up to the Student Switch Off and become an eco-power ranger! The Student Switch Off is an energy-saving competition between Halls of Residence. Halls within each University compete against each other to reduce their energy usage from the baseline year. Prizes are then given out during the year to reward individuals and halls for their hard work. Email ecopowerrangers@studentswitchoff.org or simply join the University of Warwick Eco-Power Rangers Facebook group.

Last year's winners Lakeside got a free BBQ & pub quiz! Tickets to OMG!, LUSH gift sets and an insurmountable amount of Ben & Jerry's up for grabs.

Tocil Lakes and allotments

Fancy getting your hands dirty in changing and improving the environment on campus? Check out Warwick Volunteers to get involved with the Tocil Lakes clearance project. If you're interested in growing vegetables on the new campus allotment, contact Morwenna at greens@sunion.warwick.ac.uk.

Other Campaigns of Interest

10:10: Pledge to cut your carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010.

EcoTeams: Set up an 'Eco Team' in your neighbourhood / house / corridor / flat / on your own! A great initiative to save money and cut your carbon emissions. Targets key areas of waste, energy, water & travel.

Snap It Off: Lights left on on campus? Text 'NUS' with a picture message of the light to 07725202020!

Freecycle: Nonprofit organization allows people to swap / reuse goods. Post what you have to offer / what you want.

What can you do?

Recycle! If you live on campus, there are now recycling bins for each kitchen. They are testament to the power of environmental campaigning on campus. We need to make sure that the system is used properly, as it could be taken away if not, so please follow the instructions on your bin and contact me if you have any problems or questions.

If you live in Leamington (WDC), you will be given grey sacks for general waste and red boxes for mixed recyclables (bar card / plastic bottles which should be placed in the white reusable bags. Order more red boxes / recycling bags here.

Hopefully you’ve been inspired to get involved with green campaigns on campus. If you think there’s a topic that we haven’t got covered, get in touch and we’ll fill the gaps with a new, exciting and creative campaign.
